Abstract

Why do Babies Fall Asleep in Moving Cars?

Thomas Köhn, Oliver Kissling

We wanted to find out why babies fall asleep so easily in moving cars. We asked parents with small babies and tested their theories with vacuum cleaner experiments. We found that neither the engine sound nor the rocking movement of a moving car alone is sufficient to calm the baby. Only their combination lets the baby drift off to sleep quickly.
