Abstract

Saving Energy at Schools

Daniel Schlich

project report

A normal day at our school: Lights remain on for hours without any reason and rooms are being (over)heated while not being used (sometimes while the windows are open). I have developed a control system that manages the energy use in the school building using microprocessors in order to address this problem. A computer controls heating and lighting based on the room allocation plan so that unused rooms are neither heated nor lit. The lighting and heating plan can be overridden at the control compuer to allow for exceptional use, e.g. for special events.
