Abstract

Model of a Radio Telescope

Matthias Schäfers

project report

I am interested in astronomy and I have been to a number of open days at radio telescopes, which led to the idea of building a model of the radio telescope Stockert near Eschweiler/Bad Münstereifel.

The goal of my project is the creation of a model that can explain and demonstrate the working principle of a radio telescope. This would be particularly useful at school and for presentations.

The model of a radio telescope should simulate the features and working principles of a real radio telescope. In particular, the accurate angular control using degrees with LEGO mindstorm motors, receiving ultrasound signals which simulate radio signals from space, and the conversion of the ultrasound signal into an audible signal that can also be recorded using a sound card by a computer.
