Our project is about the water challenges in the megacity Mumbai. Mumbai has a population of 21 million and it is one of the world's fastest growing metropolitan areas.
Mumbai's infrastructure cannot keep up with the rapid population growth. This leads to housing problems and as a result about half of the population lives in slums, where water supply and sewage are particularly challenging. Using questionnaires and interviews we were able to assess the water problems. It emerged that the water supply and sewage system are insufficient with regard to quantity an contamination, particularly in the slums. In order to offer at least a rudimentary solution, we built simple filters from common materials.
