Abstract

Levitation Without Cheating

project report

The goal of our project is the creation of microstructures in levitating droplets. We used magnetic levitation for our initial experiments, however, we quickly came to the realization that the Leidenfrost effect is more suitable. This allowed us to realize zinc oxide microstructures.

In order to optimize our method, we built an apparatus that can create standing ultrasound waves. Using these standing pressure waves, we were able to levitate polystyrene spheres, however, we did not succeed with water droplets due to their substantially larger mass. We are hoping to succeed with electrically charged droplets.
