Abstract

Detection of the Differential Solar Rotation

Andreas Goris

My physics class inspired me to build my own telescope using a spectacle lens and a magnifying lens. I wanted to prove that the sun rotates differently near its equator and its poles. However, due to a rainy summer I could only track a few solar spots.

Before my error analysis I thought that I had clearly shown that the solar spots move faster near the solar equator than near the solar poles. However, my error analysis showed that my measurements only weakly support this conclusion.
