The construction of a powerful but nevertheless cheap spectrometer seems to be an impossible task. I was able to build a spectrometer with a resolution of 2 nm for less than 5 marks (€ 2.50) using a compact disc (CD), which is known to reflect rainbow colors. The spectrometer is small, robust and versatile.
