Abstract

Study and Manipulation of the Communication of Bacteria

project report

Antibiotic-resistant bacteria are a global challenge for doctors and scientists. An increasing number of multidrug-resistant bacteria indicate that this challenge is becoming increasingly serious as bacteria evolve towards "absolute" resistance.

Our project is concerned with the deployment of intelligent antibiotics based on experiments with harmless bacterial cultures. In contrast to conventional antibiotics we do not kill the bacteria, but we neutralize a selected species of bacteria by disrupting the communication within that species. In principle, this approach should not affect other species of bacteria and it cannot lead to drug resistance. We will improve our methods until the Rotary contest takes place.
