Abstract

Heavy Metal Meter

Marian-Jonas Justen, Emily Schneider

project report

Our project on electrolysis-based quantitative heavy metal detection is based on Marian Justen's work on electrolysis-based cleaning of water with unpolarizable electrodes, which was motivated by the flood in Bad Münstereifel. The goal was to remove heavy metals from rivers without any significant impact on the ecosystem.

Here, we use electrolysis and detected current and voltage to determine the concentration of several heavy metal cations in water. The data should be recorded and processed by a computer program written in C++.

Our goal is to develop a user-friendly prototype that measures the concentration of several heavy metals in water. Accuracy and speed are of particular importance. At the same time, the method should be harmless and cheaper and simpler than the widely-used spectroscopy techniques.
