Abstract

Electrical Wind

project report

Can an electrical fire extinguisher work? My project is about testing this claim which can be found on the internet. First I tried to extinguish a candle using an electrostatic generator and a metal tip, however, this did not work. Using a high voltage source, which can generate up to 25 kV, I was able to blow out a candle from a short distance away. This worked particularly well, when I used a metal funnel to collect and collimate the electrical wind. The air flow becomes turbulent and is stabilized at its opening. Furthermore, a plasma is generated in the funnel and the larger number of ions leads to an even stronger wind. Nevertheless, through my experiments I have come to the conclusion that the electrical fire extinguisher that was described online is a fake, i.e. it does not work.
